While working as a counselor for a therapeutic foster care agency for six years, I was flabergasted to see the impact that both heredity and environment can have on a child's development.  Many children were extremely developmentally delayed due to the neglectful environment they were brought up in.  It was amazing to see how much progress was made after being in a positive and stimulating environment.
